She was originally planned to be named after Wilhelm von Tegetthoff.Throughout 1944, Prinz Eugen provided gunnery support throughout the Baltic, firing thousands of shells, evading aircraft, and accidently ramming the Nurnberg-class cruiser Leipzig. She was torpedoed by a submarine several days later, forcing her into lengthy repairs. In February 1942, Prinz Eugen joined Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during the Channel Dash-a daring run through the defended British Channel. After the battle, engine difficulties forced her to return to port. When they were engaged by the British, the Prinz Eugen was confused for the Bismarck thanks to their somewhat similar layout. Her first mission was to escort the Bismarck on its fateful mission. She was commissioned into the German Navy in 1940, but still had trials to complete. Supposedly built under the 10,000 ton limit for cruisers, Prinz Eugen actually displaced nearly 17,000 tons! In 1935, Germany signed the Anglo-German Naval Agreement that allowed Germany to begin rearming its navy, Prinz Eugen and her sisters of the Admiral Hipper-class were a large part of that effort. ![]() ![]() The German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen has quite a story behind her.
